Tobago Fashion Week Begins This Month

Caribbean fashion will get a boost when the islands of Trindad & Tobago host Tobago Fashion Week later this month. The highly anticipated event will feature Caribbean style from May 25 to May 27, 2012.

The theme for the event is “Dan Dan Fiesta” and will take place at Pigeon Point Heritage Park in Tobago. Tobago Fashion Week 2012 (TFW) is in its second year and hopes to play off its successful first year by increasing featured Caribbean fashion designers, opening a Fashion Park for retail options, incorporating educational opportunities, and bringing in Anya-Ayoung Chee, the Caribbean fashion designer who recently won Project Runway.

The three-day event will launch with a cocktail party on May 25th, and the runway shows will begin May 26th and last until the 27th. Guests attending the event can dive right into Caribbean style with Fashion Park. Fashion Park will allow attendees to purchase items right off the runway from the designers. If your taste caters to luxury fashion style or any other designs, you are able to purchase that evening.

This year, TFW has opened many doors for the Caribbean style setters by exposing their designs to retail and financial outlets for long-term development. They are able to partner with state and private institutions and allow buyers to have direct access to their pieces for their markets.

The event is organized by the Designers United Stores (DUS), a non-profit group looking to enhance Trinidad & Tobago’s fashion industry so they can compete and thrive across the world as entrepreneurs and as successful business throughout many sectors.

Ashley Christmas, director of DUS stated, “We at Designers United Stores are committed to further evolve as an incubator for the local fashion industry. This year we are confident that Tobago Fashion Weekend will benefit all the industry stakeholders.” She continued, “We want to take it even further and benefit our beautiful island, too, by fostering an industry that values and protects our environment so you’ll see many green and renewable energy practices incorporated into the event.”

Tickets for TWF are on sale now and the model casting will take place THIS weekend (May 5-6) for the shows. Tickets are on sale at 11 locations throughout Trinidad & Tobago. For more information about Tobago Fashion Weekend visit www.dus1.org.
